What do we do? We’re the conflict resolution, de-escalation and mediating, problem-solving, safety and security, crowd and line control arm of the convention. We hold onto your lost & found, we provide information and directions, we watch the cosplay gatherings, help photographers find great and safe places for their photo shoots. We help lost parents find their children. We help everyone feel safe and have a good time at their convention. We provide safe-haven for attendees and staff alike.

Who are we? We are known as Convention Operations, or ConOps for short. We’re the staff in the bright yellow ConOps vests. Sometimes we cosplay, sometimes we don’t. Our team is made up of fans and non-fans, but mostly of people who are passionate about putting on a great convention for others, and take their work seriously.

Who are you? Are you a trustworthy, reliable and responsible person with an excellent attention to customer service, an eagerness to learn our duties and the ability to take direction from senior staff (who may be around your age)? Do you possess the interpersonal skills to help guide others? Can you keep calm in stressful situations, and are you able to think on your feet? Can you be an impartial observer to all around you? If you answered yes to many of the above questions, you just might have what it takes to be a member of ConOps Staff.

Why should I join? Our conventions are not-for-profit conventions run by non-paid volunteers. We offer Staff Rate (usually half-off the weekend rate) memberships for first time staffers. Most conventions offer a comped membership when a certain number of hours is reached, and with the promise that you’ll volunteer the following year. Some offer partial or full reimbursements of your hotel costs for staying at the hosting hotel and rooming with other staffers. Sometimes we get free or discounted parking. We’re often fed free of charge by our Staff Lounge departments. Some departments have free hotel crash space available for people that can’t afford their own hotel reservations hotel.

We provide all training before the convention mostly in written materials and interaction with your fellow senior staffers. ConOps holds recruiting events and get-togethers a few times during the year, as well as in-person training sessions to keep all of our volunteers up-to-date on policy. We keep up with each other away from the convention, and Management Staffers–mostly HR and Scheduling–spend a good chunk of the time in between conventions planning for the next convention. We welcome all that want to help us, either behind the scenes or at the conventions.

Be aware that ConOps can be a very physical and mental intensive position requiring volunteers to be on their feet, both in stationary and ambulatory roles, around large swaths of areas such as convention centers, hotels and surrounding venues. ConOps is usually the front line when a dispute is occurring, and requires that staff be able to remain calm and collected in mentally stressful situations. If, for whatever reason, you are unable to be on your feet for any periods of time or cannot mentally handle the stresses of dealing with potentially intense and stressful situations, be aware that it might be in your best interest to seek staffing for another department within the convention that doesn’t have as high of a physical or mental requirement.

You must be over the age of 18 by January 1st of the convention year you plan to staff. For liability reasons, ConOps cannot accept any staff volunteers under the age of 18. Exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis.


 

A note about Anime Los Angeles: We require that you provide a recommendation from an existing or past high-ranking staffer (Department, Division Head or Chair/Vice), or any member of the existing ConOps team in order to apply for ConOps. Be aware that there may be an interview process via email with our ConOps HR Manager, and we will let you know if you’ve been selected to be part of ConOps for Anime Los Angeles. Do not assume that submission of a form is an automatic acceptance to ConOps, nor is communication with our HR an indication of acceptance. Otherwise, if you do not know anyone on staff, we will require a resume showing any customer service, convention or event management, event security, crisis counseling or volunteer related experience.
